Last week, over 50 D.C. hosts gathered at Mr. Henry’s Restaurant, a local Capitol Hill pub, to meet fellow hosts from across the city, speak with home sharing experts, and discuss their own experiences.
Hosts were joined by special guest Mayor Michael Nutter, the former mayor of Philadelphia and chair of Airbnb’s Mayoral Advisory Council, who spoke to attendees about the importance of host involvement in the local community and in shaping policy – especially when the D.C. City Council considers home sharing legislation.
This exciting event was organized by Cathy Cook, the leader of the D.C. Home Sharing Club, who led a great discussion about her experiences as a long-time Airbnb host.
Cathy also highlighted several exciting new tools offered by Airbnb Action, including The Community Center, a forum where hosts and community members can discuss various home sharing topics and plan more events.
The group also took a moment to recognize the incredible efforts of Ward 6 host Elizabeth Risley, who personally collected 60 signatures this year from local businesses that support home sharing in the community, including Bullfrog Bagels and Ben’s Chili Bowl.
Elizabeth’s amazing work is part of a larger effort among D.C. hosts to spread financial opportunity throughout the city’s eight wards. All year, hosts have been reaching out to small businesses like Mr. Henry’s to help welcome guests from around the globe and build support for home sharing in the nation’s capital.
This year will continue to be an important time for Airbnb in Washington, D.C., and there is a lot more work to be done. Sign up with Airbnb Action today to stay up-to-date on all home sharing news and upcoming events.
Next up is the “East of the River” event at the Anacostia Arts Center on September 14th. We hope to see you there!
